Dei gesta per Francos: Etudes sur les croisades dιdiιes ΰ Jean Richard, editor, with M. Balard and B.Z. Kedar (Aldershot (Ashgate), 2001) Crusading became a manifestation of lay piety, of Christian love, as the territory sanctified by Christ’s terrestrial presence – Christ’s very patrimony – was retaken from the infidel and defended in his name. The traditional metaphor of the monk as soldier fighting in Christ’s cause through prayer was actualised. And the people you interviewed for the book were both from within the Conservative party and outside of it? David Abulafia (August 2017). "Obituary: Jonathan Riley-Smith 1938-2016". History at Cambridge. Faculty of History, Cambridge. Issue 9: 10. Montjoie: Studies in Crusade History in Honour of Hans Eberhard Mayer, editor, with Benjamin Z. Kedar and Rudolf Hiestand (Aldershot, Variorum, 1997)

The Knights of St John in Jerusalem and Cyprus, c. 1050–1310 (London, Macmillan, 1967, reprinted 2002) A journalist who has covered everything from Brexit to Partygate, to Liz Truss vs the Lettuce, is Ben Riley-Smith. He was appointed political editor at The Telegraph over two and half years ago but has been covering UK politics (and US politics from 2017 to 2021) for over a decade. We chatted to him about how the political and media landscape has changed during that time and about his book, The Right to Rule, which looks to explain how in a world of near constant change, the Conservatives have managed to stay in government for so long.a b George Garnett (6 October 2016). "Jonathan Riley-Smith obituary". Scholar of the Crusades whose books promoted the public’s interest in his subject. The Guardian, London . Retrieved 10 August 2017. Riley-Smith appeared in the documentary series Crusades (1995) as an historical authority. However, the series adopted the by then outdated views of Steven Runciman, which were not held by the interviewed experts. Then the producers edited the taped interviews so that the historians seemed to be agreeing with Runciman. Riley-Smith said of the producers, "they made me appear to say things that I do not believe!" [9] Personal life [ edit ] Lord Cameron said he had given up all other jobs to accept the new role, declaring: “I now have one job as Foreign Secretary of the United Kingdom.” There were many more books on the same and similar themes, which tapped into the wider public interest that Riley-Smith had been a leading light in promoting. This August he launched a massive internet calendar of the charters and other legal documents of the Latin East. His credentials as a election winner were also a factor, according to government sources, and he is expected to play a prominent role in the Tories’ campaign next year.

Riley-Smith was the eldest of four children born into a prosperous Yorkshire brewing family. His maternal grandfather (to whose memory he later dedicated his book What Were the Crusades?) was the British Conservative Party MP, John Craik-Henderson (1890-1971). [4] In 1968 he married Louise Field, a portrait painter. She survives him, as do their children, Toby, Tammy and Polly. As a companion, he was enthusiastic, forceful, funny, direct, sympathetic, perceptive, old-fashioned (he was forever enveloped in a miasma of pipe smoke, and latterly snuff) and courageous. He evinced a boundless generosity of spirit. But the reshuffle was brought forward by the row about her comments, according to Downing Street insiders, with the announcements previously having been planned for later in the year.

In a phrase coined by William Hague, and used more than once in Ben Riley-Smith’s engaging first book, “The Conservative Party is an absolute monarchy, moderated by regicide.” Riley-Smith, political editor of this newspaper, adds that “the Conservatives pride themselves on being the most successful political party in democratic history.” The one begets the other. The Prime Minister and Chancellor have discussed cutting the rate from 40 per cent after months of publicly downplaying expectations. Ms Atkins replaced Mr Barclay as Health Secretary, while Richard Holden, first elected in 2019, was elevated to the Cabinet by becoming chairman of the Conservative Party.Lord Frost, Mr Johnson’s Brexit negotiator who, like Lord Cameron, held a Cabinet role and sat in the House of Lords, was also critical, writing: “This reshuffle shows the Government has decided its direction of travel.
