About this deal

The regular version is marginally heavier, contains less recycled material, but includes Scarpa's "Super Gum" rubber; otherwise the two shoes are identical. It climbs well, has plenty of support for long days in the aiders, and offers quality comfort for longer hikes. While it is beaten out by the mega-lightweight TX2 but about two ounces, this shoe is more supportive.

All of this comes for less than most other approach shoes on the market, making this pair an easy choice for the best value. The Enertor Performance are after-market insoles purchased separately, and provide substantially more support and cushion than standard insoles. The estimated platform from my measurements have the TX Guide with 18mm of foam in the forefoot and 28mm of foam in the heel.

If that is your primary focus, then the La Sportiva TX Guide offers a much better balance of weight and climbing performance. The TX Guide is a very firm and stable trail shoe that has been the perfect option to handle technical trails and heavy packs. The TX3 is not waterproof, but it is extremely light and breathable and therefore will dry quickly after getting wet. That being said, I am traveling to Scotland in September to hike the Speyside Way (which will be my first multi day – long hiking trip) and September is said to be one of Scotland’s wettest months of the year.

As I mentioned before, I don’t use these shoes for climbing, but the lacing customization has been fantastic for hiking and backpacking. This combination suited my wide foot especially well; however, it seems that all foot types would benefit from a secure fit and room for toes to breathe and move on the downhill. What we like: Great combination of hiking and climbing performance; Megagrip sole is very sticky and durable. The tongue on the TX3 is a burrito wrap style with a gusset stitch only on the medial side of the shoe. Featuring a thin mesh upper and thin rubber sole, these shoes are like slippers, but unfortunately, they lack performance in most other metrics. The TX3 is a solid all-arounder, merging exceptional comfort with both climbing and hiking performance. In short, this is a rugged mountain shoe that can take massive amounts of abuse without missing a beat. Armed with the information we've provided, you should feel confident to start your journey toward finding the perfect pair of approach shoes for your next objective or for your lifestyle.

They are more bulky though than the TX2s (well, everything is bulkier than TX2s, which is why I still love them). ounces and featuring a synthetic knit upper, fairly roomy toe box, and dotted rubber on the forefoot, the Mission LT and TX3 clearly have a lot in common. We loved the stiff sole of the TX3, and the burly outer lugs kept us stable on the most uneven terrain in the Sierra. With a breathable polyester mesh upper, a stable injected EVA midsole, and a super sticky Vibram MegaGrip outsole, there is a lot to love about the TX3. The downside to this thin sole is less hiking comfort, but these slipper-like shoes aren't meant to be worn for long walks. After a very full spring and summer, my La Sportiva TX3s have seen more than 100 days of use and are still alive and kicking. After trying on a couple of other options, none of which fitted me well, the La Sportiva TX3 was suggested. Our testers put these shoes through endless miles of hiking and scrambling to find their weak points, from stitching to materials to rubber.

We covered our experiences with the TX3 above, and the TX lineup includes a number of other variations. Furthermore, the TX2 Evo has elastic bands on each heel midsole that wrap around the shoes when paired together, keeping them in a tight package for clipping to the back of a harness or stuffing them into a pack. I’m able to get them snug and tight for uphill peak bagging, and then loosen up the toe box a bit of smooth stretches of downhill hiking.Given its almost entirely mesh upper, the TX3 is quite bendy and was unstable under tension in the crampon. The heel on the TX Guide has a very rigid heel counter provided by the PU heel wrap and fits very snug and secure. With just a couple hours before we needed to hit the road I needed to find some new canyoning shoes — not an easy thing to do when you have small but broad feet! They are torqued into cracks, bent into crevices in talus fields, and dragged up chimneys while clipped to the back of a harness. This sub is about overnight backcountry backpacking, with a focus on moving efficiently, packing light, generally aiming at a sub 10 pound base weight, and following LNT principles.
